Benjamin Moore reveals its trend-setting Colour of the Year

A sophisticated, rich and royal amethyst, leading north American paint brand Benjamin Moore has revealed Shadow 2117-30 as its highly anticipated Colour of the Year 2017.

Unveiled alongside a corresponding palette consisting of 22 deep, saturated hues, this allusive and enigmatic shade is a dramatic and contemporary colour that is brought to life through light, ebbing and flowing with its surroundings.

Founded in 1883, American brand Benjamin Moore is a leading manufacturer of residential and commercial coatings. Distributed exclusively in the UK by Shaw Paints since September 2015, the brand is renowned worldwide for producing superior products, the beauty and quality of its colours as well as its extraordinary palette of more than 3500 colours.

Taking cues from around the world, from architecture, fashion, textiles, home furnishings and the arts, when choosing the 2017 Colour of the Year, the Benjamin Moore Colour Studio discovered an increased desire for a more rich and sumptuous palette than the neutral tones of more recent years.

Intense, luminous and exuberant,“Shadow is a master of ambiance,” comments Ellen O’Neill, Benjamin Moore’s Creative Director. “It is a colour that calls to mind a ‘past’, yet it can also make a contemporary, colour-confident statement. It is sophisticated, provocative and poetic, it can bring energy to a space or harmony and a moment of respite.” From Paris markets to museums in Denmark and London bookshops, O’Neill found this year’s hue lurking in every corner of the world, dripping in drama.

Ranging from muted pales to saturated deeps, Shadow is accompanied by 22 other complementing shades. An inspirational palette, the 2017 Colour Trends illustrate the use of colour in ways that celebrate how shadow and light travel throughout a space during the course of a day. Lending significant consideration to the pairing of colours and relationships between colour families, the 2017 palette speaks to the newfound level of confidence in deeper hues among design professionals and consumers.

Telling a colour story where light is the protagonist, the campaign was shot in a single house over the course of a day, exploring the playful cast of shadows of the morning light, afternoon light, sunset and evening light. From the breaking light of dawn to the silhouettes of sunset and evening candle-lit shadows, the Colour of the Year and its accompanying hues deliver an inspirational and versatile colour narrative.

With a relentless commitment to producing the finest quality paints, every one of the products produced by Benjamin Moore undergoes independent testing in order to provide customers with a consistently reliable and durable finish as well as long-lasting premium colour coverage. Underpinning all of the fantastic Benjamin Moore product lines is the proprietary Gennex Waterborne colourant technology.
