The Nahema Chair’s design was influenced by the mid-century. With its classic design and elegant, yet quirky, hand detailing, intricately hand-crafted from exquisite gold brass, its beauty is owed to the sultriness of the 1970s. In keeping with the KOKET brand identity, I added an opulent ‘KOKET touch’ to Nahema’s design through the use of the black and gold colour variation.
Nahema surely represents the allure of KOKET as a brand. Commonly, KOKET does not show traces of mid-century modern design. But the truth is, Nahema is a timeless design, however it still applies the seductive ‘KOKET touch’. It represents KOKET’s culture in its playful embellishment and black and gold structure.
During the design process, I was inspired by the Art Deco period and started looking through a collection of vintage design archives, pulling designs from different eras and then adding the opulent ‘KOKET touch’. Many of my inspirations come from the same era, especially from the influence of Art Deco and Oriental design. So, when it came to an era that the Nahema Chair would fit into, the sultriness of the 1970s era was a focal point for me.
Black and gold is a luxury combination and it’s KOKET’s signature. I love this mix. I always start with black and then add pops of gold details. The beautiful Satina Lux White Cloud White, used on the upholstery for the Nahema Chair, was selected from KOKET’s textiles collection. The Satina Lux White gave a very elegant and modern touch to the Nahema chair.
I was also very inspired by jewellery; it felt natural to add a cuff into the hand detailing. KOKET pieces are always detailed.
This new collection differs in the way that the pieces are not as inventive and elaborate as the icons of KOKET’s Guilty Pleasures collection. I’ve been a devotee of the Art Deco, mid-century, modern and Oriental design eras. This time, instead of large, ornamental details, I chose to focus on the timelessness of the design – always with the opulent touch of course. There are still lavish accents visible, but they are more subtle, like the Nahema Chair’s hand detailing. I believe we have become established enough as a brand to apply a more mature approach to design.
When designing this chair, I envisaged it in situ within a charming dining room. My mission with KOKET has always been to empower and seduce with daring designs, all while giving women the ability to express their true style – that’s the kind of client that I see when designing; a powerful woman who’s comfortable taking risks.
